In 3rd grade guidance, students have been learning about empathy. The unit concluded this week with a STEMpathy activity where students were given Legos or Knex and scenarios of others who have some sort of barrier or difficulty. Students first empathize with the person to gain a better understanding of the barriers the person is facing. Then, they hypothesize how they can remove these barriers - help the person, showing they care. Students are able to put the three parts of empathy into action, 1. How is the person feeling. 2. Why is that person feeling that way? What can I do to help/to show I care? Once the students understand the why of their design, the innovation starts!
Teaching students to consider someone’s point of view, needs, and barriers can help them to gain a better understanding not only of the need for design and innovation but also grow their empathy skills. They were asked questions like:
What is this person going through?
What is it like to be this person?
What barriers does this person face that is preventing him from accessing his environment?
What can you do to remove these barriers for this person?

Although our Kids Heart Challenge looked different this year, our students more than ever, understood the importance of helping others as well as keeping themselves healthy.
We are so proud of our Brookwood Heart Heroes! Our School raised over $17,000 for the American Heart Association. This is our highest total ever! We had 26 students raise over $250. These students earned our extra “Pie A Teacher” incentive which will be happening soon! All thank you gifts have been ordered for students as well and should arrive within the next few weeks.
We had 114 students register online and take the challenge. 58 challenged themselves to be kind, 28 challenged themselves to move more, and 26 challenged themselves to drink more water. 4 classrooms earned recess gear to keep themselves moving and active by having more than 75% of their classes registered. Way to go Ms. Flood’s kindergarten, Mrs. Hanson’s 1st grade, Ms. Bartucci’s 1st grade, and Mr. Hanson’s 2nd grade!
US Games gifted our school new P.E. equipment to help our students stay active as well as money to go towards and educational experience for them.
We spent 2 weeks learning about heart healthy choices and then we celebrated with our glow event on March 16th and 17th where students were able to participate in different stations. Some of the stations included: dance, jump rope, trampoline, heart rate, long jump, hopscotch, hula hoop, balance beam, and creating our “We Jump For” hearts. Some of our virtual students even joined us for this event!

Hello Brookwood Families!
As part of our mental health grant, we are currently setting up calming corners in all kindergarten - 5th grade classrooms and some related art’s classrooms! We are also distributing personal calming kits for each student containing items such as a stress ball, playdough and breathing boards.
Calming corners are physical spaces that allow students the opportunity to work through emotions they are feeling and/or refocus themselves, without leaving the immediate learning space. Each calming corner has a basket of materials and tools for students to use for this purpose. A calming corner is not a time-out chair; this is not a punishment or discipline practice. It is a place for a child that is frustrated, sad, or otherwise upset to practice calming strategies and further develop their emotional regulation skills.
We are teaching our students about emotional regulation by utilizing the Zones of Regulation curriculum (see chart below). We let the students know that taking a quick break at the calming corner can help them calm themselves and refocus, allowing them to manage their emotion, and rejoin the class ready to learn. Calming corners allow us to have a variety of helpful coping strategies & tools on-hand (such as deep breathing strategies, sensory tools, stress ball etc.). This will be new and novel at first, but just like any other classroom routine, in time it becomes commonplace for the students. They use it as a tool for their learning like using a word wall or multiplication chart. Zones of Regulation is good for School & Home! The language we use to describe feelings is anchored in a set of tools called, “Zones of Regulation.” It is based on a simple 4-part division of emotional states that gives a child a starting point to articulate their feelings to both themselves and others.

This year our 4K & 5K registration process has adapted with the times a bit. We want to be sensitive to the health and safety of our families and future students, as well as to our current students and staff. We do want to limit the exposures and close contacts to all of these groups. Our goal this year has been to remain safe, healthy, and open for our community.
This year we will be offering two different options for 4k and new 5k student registration. The 1st option is a virtual tour and introductions to our staff and programs. This will be through the connected video links we have posted here.

This week from Monday March 22nd - Thursday March 25th we will be accepting registration materials at the BES Office from 7:45am - 3:45 pm. Mrs. Wisneski will be in the office to receive filled out registration packets, verify birth certificates and addresses, as well as to answer any questions you may have. Registration packets have been sent out to any families that have signed up on our district website. If you still need a packet or missed the registration week, you can still get registration packets sent to you by going here: https://www.genoacityschools.org/o/bes/page/4k-5k-registration In addition we will have packets at both the Brookwood Elementary and Middle School offices for pick up.
The second registration option is to attend our registration night on March 25th. This will be from 5-6:30. We do ask if you are choosing this option that you call Mrs. Wisneski to sign up for a time slot for your family. The inperson night will include all the information from the virtual tour, and classrooms will be open for you to step into if you would like.
Whichever option works best for you and your family, please have all registration materials filled out prior to coming to the school. This will expedite the registration process and limit waiting and long lines.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. This year, Covid has caused music to look different. Whether at home or at school, our students are having a great time participating in musical activities.
Last year, the Musication site created videos for families to play at home. From activities like this, students learn rhythm, how to cooperate in a group, and music appreciation.
