This morning, the 3rd grade Kindness Squad (with the help of their families) put on an amazing breakfast for the BES teachers! There was everything from biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausage, yogurt with granola, waffle bar, beautiful fruit, yummy pastries, and desserts. The students were beyond excited to be able to serve the teachers breakfast. We are so proud of their dedication to kindness and serving others.

The schools were a sea of green today as staff and students showed support for Children's Mental Health Awareness. K-3 students have learned what mental health is, how to practice self care, managing big emotions and understanding that it's okay to ask for help when their mind doesn't feel healthy and happy.

1st grade students just finished their Unit on Plants where they learned a lot about plants, plant habitats, plant parts, and what plants need to survive. On May 16th, 1st grade students will be walking to Veteran's Park to play. Then, they will be going to Badger High School to get a tour of the greenhouses and learn more about the plant process. This is a great opportunity for our students to connect more with our curriculum as well as our community.

Today was a great day for 3rd and 4th grade students! The 3rd graders came to the middle school and were welcomed by Mr. Lubus, got to meet the related arts teachers, had lunch with the 4th graders, and then had fun in the forest all afternoon. There was a scavenger hunt, Gaga ball, and some exploration fun for everyone. They even helped removed an invasive species called buckthorn.

Green Schools Club is an after school club hosted at BES for students in grades 1st-4th. They are helping Brookwood Elementary establish good recycling habits! Every Wednesday, members collect and take out recyclables from all around the building! Their next mission is composting lunch and snack scraps for the community garden. Kristin Freytag, from the Environmental Education Foundation, is donating a barrel composter and the club members are learning as much as they can about good composting. They can't wait to get started! More information: Melissa.Bobula@gcj2.k12.wi.us

DPI, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, announced six Wisconsin educators named as finalists for a national award distinguishing science and mathematics teachers for their achievement in teaching these subjects, and Genoa City Joint 2 is proud that MaryEllen Kanthack has been recognized in the science category as one of the six! The 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is considered the U.S. Government’s highest honor for science and math teachers. Kanthack teaches sixth grade at BMS and credits her students, community and colleagues for her inspiration and the success of her work. Her submission was based on research regarding how scientific argumentation in the classroom builds collaborative work and raises achievement in understanding science concepts, along with examples of many things she has accomplished for Brookwood, the state, and nationally. Congratulations, Mrs. Kanthack! Way to make us #MustangProud!!
