4th-grade students attended a class that illustrated the importance of trees. They learned about the goods and services made possible by trees, the process by which trees are converted into paper, and the ease and benefits of paper recycling. Then, students worked in pairs and constructed their own recycling mills and recycled paper right in the classroom. Each student made their own piece of recycled paper.
For Arbor Day, the Genoa City Garden Club came to teach students about Arbor Day. Students learned about the biggest tree in the US (The General Sherman is the largest tree in the U.S. and the world by volume, located in Sequoia National Park, California.)They also learned that Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman and planted thousands of apple trees from Pennsylvania to Iowa. White Pine saplings were also given to all 4th graders! Thank you to the Genoa City Garden Club for coming to spend time with us!!

Welcome to the Mustang Family: Kristin Lilla - BMS Track & Field Coach!
Kristin Lilla has joined us as a BMS track & field coach! Kristin lives in Genoa City with her family, and her son is a 6th grader at BMS. Kristin currently works as a Special Education teacher at Wauconda High School and brings 10 years of varsity coaching experience to our team. A true sports enthusiast, Kristin enjoys all athletics, with soccer being a current favorite. Kristin stays busy attending sporting events whenever she can, as she's a fan of the Cubs and Bears (but not the Packers!), and also follows the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. She's especially excited about the U.S. hosting the World Cup this year. Kristin comes from a big family—one of 9 siblings!—and has strong local ties, including her sister, our very own Kelly Cassaday, who teaches at BES. When asked what she’s most looking forward to, Kristin shared that she’s excited to see students grow & improve throughout the season.
Welcome to the staff side of our Brookwood Family, Kristin!

What a fantastic way to end the day at Brookwood Middle School yesterday! 🏐
Our annual Students vs. Staff volleyball game brought together our boys and girls teams for an afternoon full of energy, laughter, and school spirit. It was an awesome experience watching students celebrate, compete, and cheer on their classmates and even see staff get in on the action!
Moments like these remind us how powerful connection, teamwork, and joy can be in building a strong school community. Proud of our students for showing such great sportsmanship and support for one another!

BMS Entrepreneurship: A Sale by the Students, For the Students
The fourth annual Spring Entrepreneurship Sale was another great success. Throughout the project, students engaged in hands-on learning by reviewing market research, collaborating in teams, and developing products that could be created within the school setting. Each group presented their ideas in a “Shark Tank”-style pitch, allowing them to refine their concepts and address potential challenges before moving forward.
From there, students created supply lists and worked together to bring their products to market. This year’s class was smaller, so several program alumni returned for a few classes to add products so there would be enough for the student body. This added an extra layer of collaboration and community. In total, seven unique student-designed products were offered for sale. Staff and student volunteers assisted with cashiering.
This experience provides young entrepreneurs with valuable skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and customer service, while also giving their peers the opportunity to make purchasing decisions and practice handling money in a real-world setting. A customer satisfaction survey will be conducted this week, which will provide feedback to this group, and provide market research for the next sale.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the Student Activity Account. Funds raised have already been used to purchase games and activity books for indoor recess, as well as new outdoor playground equipment—directly enriching the student experience.

In 6th-grade science, students explored how heat energy moves by conducting a fun tea bag experiment. After cutting and lighting the tea bags, students observed that as the air inside heated up, it became less dense and rose, carrying the lightweight ring of ash into the air. This demonstrated convection in an exciting, hands-on way, and the students had a great time learning! Way to go, Mustangs!
