4-YEAR-OLD & 5-YEAR-OLD KINDERGARTEN

IS 4K A HALF DAY PROGRAM?

Yes and No. In the 2024-2025 school year, parents will have the option to pick between a morning 1/2 day program or a full day program. Families selecting the 1/2 day option will pick their children prior to lunch. Specific times will be set and shared out prior to the end of this school year. There will not be bus transportation home from school for students enrolled in the 1/2 day program.

IS 5K A FULL DAY PROGRAM?

Yes, our five-year-old kindergarten is a full day program. Our school day is 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Students may be dropped off at school starting at 8:20 am.

HOW OLD DO STUDENTS NEED TO BE TO ENTER 4K OR 5K?

Students need to be either 4 on or before September 1st to enter 4K. Students need to be 5 on or before September 1st to enter 5K. There are no other requirements to enter 4K or 5K kindergarten.

WHY OFFER 4K?

Four-year-old kindergarten provides children with quality early learning experiences that help provide a solid foundation for future success in school. Numerous research studies show long-term benefits for children who participate in high-quality early childhood programs, such as gains in cognition, knowledge, motor skills and language. Offering 4K through the school district ensures universal access to a quality pre-kindergarten program for all four-year-olds.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN IN 4-YEAR-OLD KINDERGARTEN?

The focus of the 4K program is to offer every child in our community equal access to a consistent, high-quality education. 4K provides a developmentally appropriate program to help children acquire social competence and the skills they need to succeed as a learner. The curriculum focuses on physical, cognitive, social/emotional, and language development in a nurturing environment. 4K early learning professionals provide:

  • Active, exploratory learning

  • Social interaction

  • Opportunities for choice

  • Independent as well as small and large group activities

  • Activities that emphasize process, rather than product

  • Foundational skills to literacy and math development within an activity-based social


Our students week includes art, music, PE, science and guidance classes. Our students also visit the library each week so that they can check out books to read with you at home!

HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED AT SCHOOL?

We love volunteers! Classroom teachers will let you know of volunteer opportunities in the classroom. We also offer a variety of family nights and events throughout the year that you can attend with your child.

WHAT IF I DON'T LIVE IN GENOA CITY JT2 SCHOOL DISTRICT BUT WANT TO HAVE MY CHILD ATTEND?

By state law, four-year-olds who reside outside of the district can apply for Open Enrollment if their resident district offers 4K. More information can be found here:  https://www.genoacityschools.org/o/gcj2sd/page/open-enrollment-information

IS THERE A COST TO ATTEND 4K?

There is no cost to families to attend the 4-year-old kindergarten program.
