Students in the seed to table class sowed carrots, lettuce, and cucumber seeds this week. Green pepper plants were fun to plant and water. After watering, hoeing, digging, weed pulling and planting, they enjoyed the sweetness of fresh strawberries from the strawberry bed! Mrs. Kanthack needs lots of help this summer to tend the garden so we can provide produce for our community food pantry and those in need. Please consider donating some time and contact her by email. All volunteers have access to the produce for their families! MaryEllen.Kanthack@gcj2.k12.wi.us

What a school year…but we made it! As tradition follows, our staff waved our students goodbye as the buses, cars, bikes, and walkers headed away from our buildings. Our staff then headed to the middle school to enjoy a district recognition and closing ceremony. The administrative staff was able to serve our district staff their lunch and the following staff members were recognized for benchmark years of service to our district: Kellie Bohn; 20 years, Stephanie Arshem; 5 years, Briana Brenek; 5 years, Karen Bullock; 5 years, Megan Hanson; 5 years, Lauren Skalecki; 5 years. The longevity of the years of service our overall staff has is one of the key pieces that makes our district a special place. For the final pieces of our closing meeting, our staff headed outside and stood in a circle listening to Ms. Bohn’s closing speech where she referenced a portion Phil Jackson’s book: Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success: “As educators, we gather children in circles in our classrooms pretty regularly, and it’s not entirely uncommon, especially pre-Covid, for us to begin or end our staff meetings in a circle as well. We know that in our classrooms, and with each other, the circle is a symbol of community. It represents the connection that we have with the others in the circle. ‘But circles actually have a deeper meaning: In Native American culture, for instance, the unifying power of the circle was so meaningful that whole nations were conceived as a series of interconnected rings (or hoops). The tepee was a ring, as were the campfire, the village, and the layout of the nation itself—circles within circles, having no beginning or end.’ (Jackson, Phil, and Hugh Delehanty. Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success. New York: Penguin Press, 2013.) A circle represents and is a symbolic of vitality, wholeness, completion, and perfection. So, as we end this challenging school year, we come together in a circle--to feel connected, protected and whole. To feel united by the experiences that we have shared, strengthened by the challenges that we have overcome, and supported by the colleagues that we value. In just a couple of minutes, you’ll leave our circle, wrap up your classroom, and begin your summer. Even though we will not be together for awhile, we are still connected as a Brookwood family. As a reminder of that, I’m sending you home with a circle of your own--as a reminder of this day, this year, this community.”

For the first time this year, the Kindergarteners joined together to perform: https://youtu.be/XV6ZAMJGg0o The melody for "I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee" was composed by Colonel Sandford C. Faulkner. We added an extra verse at the beginning. They practiced a steady beat, and worked on expression. They also sang the song "I'm Growing Up" by Mary Alice Amidon. It has been a pleasure working with the Kindergarteners this year. They have excelled under unusual circumstances; it will be exciting to watch them continue to grow musically. -Mrs. Bullock // BES & BMS Music Teacher

The Kindness Rocks Project encourages simple acts of kindness in our community. By decorating a rock with an encouraging message, you can brighten someone's day! Brookwood Elementary art students painted rocks to place in a kindness rock garden in front of their school. The rocks are there for the community to enjoy. If you see a rock that "speaks" to you, you are welcome to take it to brighten your day! Pictured are Brookwood artists in their Kindness Rocks Project. Thank you to @HighPrairieLandsapeSupply for donating rocks for our students to continue to build to our #Brookwoodrocks wall. You all ROCK!

The 3rd graders will visit the middle school on Friday to get a sneak peek into the middle school. They will be given a tour, meet the 4/5 teachers (including the related arts teachers), and eat lunch here at the middle school. This is always a pleaser for the students because they get to go through the lunch line with a tray instead of a packaged meal. The great news is that they will not have to worry about locker combinations this year, because we took the lock faces off the lockers.

The Genoa City Jt. 2 School Board recognized Heather Hoerth with a “Children First” Award at tonight’s Board Meeting. The Children First Awards were started in the fall of 2015 to recognize people who were making an extra effort to support the children in our school and community. The Board recognizes all of the work that Hoerth has done during the COVID-19 Pandemic to support children, families, staff, and community members working through the challenges associated with COVID-19. She has been a champion for consistent mitigation measures, a necessary and trusted resource to administrators and the Board in making COVID-related decisions, and a source of calm and reassurance to families working through countless worrisome situations. Hoerth’s tireless efforts in going above and beyond her regular duties to support our entire school community during this very challenging time, the Board looks forward to presenting her with a Children First Award. Outdoor education has been a part of Brookwood’s curriculum for over 30 years. Outdoor education is taught at Camp Wonderland in Salem, WI. While at Camp Wonderland students get to learn through activities such as fishing, dissecting owl pellets, hiking through nature, and learning how to build a fire. Students also get to participate in some adventurous activities including boating, rock climbing, ziplining, and archery. Camp is a great experience for our 6th grade students and we are really excited to offer this experience to our students this year —even though it may look a little different from how it’s been done in the past. Did you know that next week is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week? This year's theme is Flip the Script. A lot of times when we refer to Mental Health we may think of Depression, Anxiety, Therapy, Medication, but that isn’t always the case. In ‘Flipping the Script’ we need to think more about our Mental Health as a whole. Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Too often there is a stigma related to Mental Health and we need to Flip The Script and encourage open communication about Mental Health. Throughout next week there will be daily posts regarding Children’s Mental Health and how you can help support your child at home. On Friday, May 7th we will be showing awareness and acceptance for Children’s Mental Health by wearing Green and we hope you will join in!

The second graders worked on learning how to play the drums and the xylophones over the past two months. While we were not able to practice as a large group due to covid, we got together one time so that the students would have the opportunity to experience the instruments within a large ensemble. The students did a terrific job listening and working together. We all look forward to the day when we can practice together and bring a performance to you in person! https://youtu.be/s-X5mrBKiek

In 7th grade last week, students were able to dissect frogs and see how various body systems and organs work together. The first day was spent examining the exterior anatomy and mouth. The second day focused on internal organs and systems. The students were so curious and worked well with their lab groups. This was a great way to wrap up our unit on human body systems!

Milestones are behaviors or skills that we expect to see by a certain age. Screening in early childhood ensures that your child is on track for development that will lead to academic success. If your child isn't meeting milestones on time, they might benefit from early intervention to build their skills. This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics https://www.aap.org/en-us/advocacy-and-policy/aap-health-initiatives/Screening/Pages/Getting-Started.aspx Did you know? 1 in 4 children are at risk for developmental delay. Early intervention is more likely to be successful due to the amount the brain changes in early development. We are excited to offer our FREE Early Childhood Party! Children 18 months-3 years old at BES on April 30th. Our certified staff will be running exciting games and activities that will target specific developmental areas such as: fine motor, gross motor, speech and language, social emotional, and pre-academics. Parents will fill out a screening questionnaire beforehand, then bring join their child while our professionals interact with your child to make sure everything is on track for success! It was hands-on learning in 7th grade science recently. Students are studying the circulatory system, and had the opportunity to dissect boar hearts. They were able to see how the twisting and turning veins and arteries connect with the chambers of the heart. What a complex and amazing organ! Those who were comfortable were able to handle the hearts, following the pathway from right side, to lungs, to left side, to body, and back again to the right side of the heart. They were then able to connect our knowledge to previous learning of the respiratory system, and will take this experience into making connections to the digestive system.

The middle school student council will be doing a penny war the week of 4/12-4/16. The penny war will help support a local animal shelter. How it works: Every middle school homeroom teacher will have a bucket in the entryway of the middle school. When students walk in and out for recess, they will put pennies in their homeroom’s bucket. Every penny equals one point. Students can also put silver change in other homerooms’ buckets. All silver change takes points away from that homeroom. Example: a nickel takes away 5 points. The homeroom with the most points on Friday afternoon wins.

In 3rd grade guidance, students have been learning about empathy. The unit concluded this week with a STEMpathy activity where students were given Legos or Knex and scenarios of others who have some sort of barrier or difficulty. Students first empathize with the person to gain a better understanding of the barriers the person is facing. Then, they hypothesize how they can remove these barriers - help the person, showing they care. Students are able to put the three parts of empathy into action, 1. How is the person feeling. 2. Why is that person feeling that way? What can I do to help/to show I care? Once the students understand the why of their design, the innovation starts! Teaching students to consider someone’s point of view, needs, and barriers can help them to gain a better understanding not only of the need for design and innovation but also grow their empathy skills. They were asked questions like: What is this person going through? What is it like to be this person? What barriers does this person face that is preventing him from accessing his environment? What can you do to remove these barriers for this person?

Although our Kids Heart Challenge looked different this year, our students more than ever, understood the importance of helping others as well as keeping themselves healthy. We are so proud of our Brookwood Heart Heroes! Our School raised over $17,000 for the American Heart Association. This is our highest total ever! We had 26 students raise over $250. These students earned our extra “Pie A Teacher” incentive which will be happening soon! All thank you gifts have been ordered for students as well and should arrive within the next few weeks. We had 114 students register online and take the challenge. 58 challenged themselves to be kind, 28 challenged themselves to move more, and 26 challenged themselves to drink more water. 4 classrooms earned recess gear to keep themselves moving and active by having more than 75% of their classes registered. Way to go Ms. Flood’s kindergarten, Mrs. Hanson’s 1st grade, Ms. Bartucci’s 1st grade, and Mr. Hanson’s 2nd grade! US Games gifted our school new P.E. equipment to help our students stay active as well as money to go towards and educational experience for them. We spent 2 weeks learning about heart healthy choices and then we celebrated with our glow event on March 16th and 17th where students were able to participate in different stations. Some of the stations included: dance, jump rope, trampoline, heart rate, long jump, hopscotch, hula hoop, balance beam, and creating our “We Jump For” hearts. Some of our virtual students even joined us for this event! Please enjoy some pictures from our 2021 Kids Heart Challenge and keep an eye out for our “Pie A Teacher” video coming soon! Hello Brookwood Families! As part of our mental health grant, we are currently setting up calming corners in all kindergarten - 5th grade classrooms and some related art’s classrooms! We are also distributing personal calming kits for each student containing items such as a stress ball, playdough and breathing boards. Calming corners are physical spaces that allow students the opportunity to work through emotions they are feeling and/or refocus themselves, without leaving the immediate learning space. Each calming corner has a basket of materials and tools for students to use for this purpose. A calming corner is not a time-out chair; this is not a punishment or discipline practice. It is a place for a child that is frustrated, sad, or otherwise upset to practice calming strategies and further develop their emotional regulation skills. We are teaching our students about emotional regulation by utilizing the Zones of Regulation curriculum (see chart below). We let the students know that taking a quick break at the calming corner can help them calm themselves and refocus, allowing them to manage their emotion, and rejoin the class ready to learn. Calming corners allow us to have a variety of helpful coping strategies & tools on-hand (such as deep breathing strategies, sensory tools, stress ball etc.). This will be new and novel at first, but just like any other classroom routine, in time it becomes commonplace for the students. They use it as a tool for their learning like using a word wall or multiplication chart. Zones of Regulation is good for School & Home! The language we use to describe feelings is anchored in a set of tools called, “Zones of Regulation.” It is based on a simple 4-part division of emotional states that gives a child a starting point to articulate their feelings to both themselves and others. If you want to know more about our calming corner or our Zones curriculum, please reach out to your child’s school counselor. Sincerely, April Fitzsimmons - Elementary School Counselor Kayln Obry - Middle School Counselor

This year our 4K & 5K registration process has adapted with the times a bit. We want to be sensitive to the health and safety of our families and future students, as well as to our current students and staff. We do want to limit the exposures and close contacts to all of these groups. Our goal this year has been to remain safe, healthy, and open for our community. This year we will be offering two different options for 4k and new 5k student registration. The 1st option is a virtual tour and introductions to our staff and programs. This will be through the connected video links we have posted here. 4K Video: https://youtu.be/gjyd6niyOQY 5K Video: https://youtu.be/l1Lf28LoAg8 This week from Monday March 22nd - Thursday March 25th we will be accepting registration materials at the BES Office from 7:45am - 3:45 pm. Mrs. Wisneski will be in the office to receive filled out registration packets, verify birth certificates and addresses, as well as to answer any questions you may have. Registration packets have been sent out to any families that have signed up on our district website. If you still need a packet or missed the registration week, you can still get registration packets sent to you by going here: https://www.genoacityschools.org/o/bes/page/4k-5k-registration In addition we will have packets at both the Brookwood Elementary and Middle School offices for pick up. The second registration option is to attend our registration night on March 25th. This will be from 5-6:30. We do ask if you are choosing this option that you call Mrs. Wisneski to sign up for a time slot for your family. The inperson night will include all the information from the virtual tour, and classrooms will be open for you to step into if you would like. Whichever option works best for you and your family, please have all registration materials filled out prior to coming to the school. This will expedite the registration process and limit waiting and long lines. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 262 279-6496. Make it a great day and Go Mustangs.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. This year, Covid has caused music to look different. Whether at home or at school, our students are having a great time participating in musical activities. Last year, the Musication site created videos for families to play at home. From activities like this, students learn rhythm, how to cooperate in a group, and music appreciation. Some of these have been shared through SeeSaw for our at home learners. The Snyder family chose "musical instruments" to play along with The Can Can. It is a lot of fun to play along with this game-styled activity. Check it out here: https://tinyurl.com/3jnxfmbc Grab a box of pasta and a plastic container - or whatever you have handy, and give it a try. Today marks Day 10 of our Brookwood Reads 21 Day Family Reading Challenge and we've got some trivia for you! Did you know...... Pete the Cat is based on a kitten that the series illustrator, James Dean, adopted from a shelter in 1999. Dean named the kitten Pete. The real Pete wasn't blue; he was black. Green Eggs and Ham has only 50 words in it. Author Theodor Seuss Geisel took a dare from his editor that he could not write a book with only 50 words. It turned out he could and he won the bet! Magic Tree House Series: Just like in the books where Annie and Jack go on all sorts of adventures, author Mary Pope Osborne has traveled to many places. Growing up, she lived in 13 different houses and went to eight different schools. Dav Pilkey, the author, came up with the idea for Captain Underpants when he was just in second grade. The main characters, Harold and George, are named after two characters from other well-known children's books. Harold's name came from Harold and the Purple Crayon and George's name came from Curious George. These are all great books and authors of books that you can find at our school libraries or even our local public library! We hope that you and your family continues to be engaged in your reading to finish your challenge strong! Have pictures to share? Email them to: Helen.Xiong@gcj2.k12.wi.us

How can kids help change the world? By performing one random act of kindness at a time! Students at Brookwood Schools will kick off Kindness Week on February 16th. Kindness week will involve fun, kindness themed spirit dress up days and daily kindness challenges at both buildings. Kindness challenges will be announced each morning during announcements, so virtual students can join in the fun as well! Students (at school or virtual) participating in the kindness challenge have the chance of being caught by a staff member and earning a kindness ticket for a daily drawing. The elementary school will also be listening to and discussing a story about kindness each day.

Today is World Read Aloud Day! This day celebrates the importance of reading books aloud as a different way to learn from but also to enjoy books. Being read aloud to doesn't have to stop when you get to a certain age; it is enjoyable even for adults! In honor of this day, Ms. Bolwerk, our District Library Media Specialist, recorded a bonus read aloud video on her middle school library YouTube channel. While the channel is generally aimed at the middle school audience, this reading of Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson is a great story for all ages! You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/dSFIbz3YwxE While you are there, check out the other videos Ms. Bolwerk has created to promote books in our middle school library and the love of reading. And for those of you doing the 21 day reading challenge...the minutes from this read aloud can count towards your 21 minutes!! Thank you for your participation in this global movement, and happy reading! #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest #BrookwoodReads21

Our social/emotional focus for the month of January is Goal directed behavior. Being able to set and achieve a goal is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced throughout our lives. Everything that goes into setting and achieving goals (having a clear, specific vision of what we want to learn or accomplish; having a plan that we can actually carry out, tracking our progress along the way; and creating a timeline for reaching our goal so that we are reminded to stay on track) help to prepare us for work life, for higher education, and for contributing to our families and communities in ways that are meaningful for us. Check out our monthly family activity related to goal setting. Goal Directed Behavior - What is it? Goal-directed behavior is an important social/emotional life skill that involves more than just setting a goal - we learn quickly that goal setting is the easy part!! Goal-directed behavior has to also include: A definite set of steps we can carry out Coming up with ways to stay motivated, Creating a timeline for the goal, Tracking progress along the way so we can reflect on if our goal is being met or not! Like all social emotional skills, goal directed behavior is a life-long skill that can be taught and reflected on each time we set out to meet a goal and adjust as we learn what works and what doesn’t! As we start a new year, it is fun to think about new goals for you, your child and your family. Here is a fun activity to reflect on the year past and start your new year goal setting. It is important to think about the next steps needed (listed above) in order to complete that goal, which may look different for everyone!

Right before winter break, our 1st graders had fun with "Remembering to be a Reindeer". Remembering to be a Reindeer is a way to help set a positive and mindfulness tone during the holiday season. Each letter in the word REINDEER has a short phrase or quote to remind students, teachers, and parents what the holiday season should be about: helping others, including everyone, showing gratitude and being positive. The students had a great discussions about each of the letters in reindeer, had a blast doing the reindeer pokey, learned facts about reindeer (did you know they can run up to 50 mph?!?) and finished off class with making their own reindeer to take home. As we start this New Year, "Remembering to be a Reindeer" is a great activity for all to check out; not just our 1st graders. Thinking positively and staying kind are some key traits we all should hold near and dear. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Optimistic thinking is our social/emotional focus for December. The importance of having a sense of optimism and hope for the future helps build up resiliency in our students. Our classroom teachers are helping develop and support the skill of optimistic thinking and are observing things like: Does my student say good things about themselves? Does my student carry themselves with confidence? Does my student say good things about the future? Please help your child practice optimistic thinking at home with these suggestions from the GCJ2 Pupil Services Team. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

In recognition of Computer Science Education Week, all students at the elementary and middle schools took part in the Hour of Code program. This year’s Hour of Code occurred in over 180 countries, with over 68,000 events taking place! During our event this week, students were able to explore the world of coding, building technology skills and promoting problem-solving. Learning how to move pieces like monkeys, monsters, and Minecraft characters around a virtual area using code was very exciting…some students didn’t want to stop! We are very grateful to have a technology-supportive district where students can build STEAM skills and enjoy learning at the same time. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Right now with all the uncertainty and change in our daily lives, it is completely normal and expected for kids and adults alike to have anxious thoughts. There is no one right way to respond to anxiety/worry/stress, but it is so important to provide an opportunity to allow them to open up about their feelings. Research has shown that are several things that can be done to help combat the feelings of anxiety/worry and it starts with 1) talking about it, 2) making sure others feel heard/safe, and 3) engaging in coping skills. These few little statements are just one way that all three of these things can be accomplished and can help your kids, yourself, and others around you get a sense of control over their anxiety! Try it out! - GCJ2 Pupil Services Team Julia Garczynski - Director of Pupil Services Annie Halterman - School Psychologist April Fitzsimmons - Elementary School Counselor Kayln Orby - Middle School Counselor

GCJ2 Family: We are truly thankful and blessed to have you all as a part of our Brookwood Family. We appreciate your continuous support in our school District. Have a restful few days off and we will see you all on Monday. Each year the students in Miss Flood's kindergarten get asked a question....."I want to make a turkey for my family to eat for Thanksgiving. What do I need to do?" And the students take it from there.... We hope that you've already started preparing your meals.....fair warning: We are NOT responsible for any hospital visits that may occur as a result of trying our recipes! 😀 We hope you enjoy this 29th edition of Ms. Flood's Kindergarten Thanksgiving Cookbook! https://tinyurl.com/y3lqz884

The kindergarten student in Mrs. Renn's class worked on making turkeys. These turkeys are a form of process art that gives students freedom to choose how they want to create their art and how the final product will look. Making art is a wonderful way to work on finger strength, fine motor skills, and following directions. Skills included gluing, cutting, and coloring. These turkeys will decorate our school and homes. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

We are excited to announce that Kohl's Wild Theater will be presenting a virtual assembly for our 4K through 5th grade students! On December 4th, the students ( virtual and in-person) will go on an adventure to the Zoo with a student named Skyler. After a mysterious encounter with a wise river turtle, Skylar is transformed into a Humboldt penguin, a zebra, and a river otter. Skylar learns that to return to human form, one must “wade with the waddle,” “doze with the dazzle” and “roll with the romp.” With the help of some colorful animals and a caring zookeeper, Skylar learns to overcome a fear of interacting with others. This 40-minute interactive musical meets social-emotional learning standards by exploring the connections between young people, zookeepers, and animals. Teachers will be providing the link to view the assembly on the day of the performance.

Sometimes practicing spelling words can be a draggggg....but not in Miss Ferguson's 2nd-grade classroom! Her second graders love to practice their spelling words with....shaving cream! This not only helps students practice their spelling words but it also allows their brains to grow in a multi-sensory activity as well! Have you tried spelling with shaving cream?! #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Each Friday they turn off the lights during reading stamina time and students read using finger flashlights. This is not only a really fun and engaging way to work on their reading stamina, but it also helps students develop their tracking skills in reading! To celebrate national Farm to School Month, students in grades 4/5 "crunched" into locally grown apples from Hafs Road Orchard! Schools around Wisconsin "crunched" at noon today! The socially distanced outdoor crunch was a huge success! The Great Lakes Apple Crunch hopes to get over 2 million crunches today and throughout the month of October! Apples were purchased with a grant from Fuel Up to Play 60. In STEAM class at BMS, students are discovering how they can learn about many subjects at once. For this activity, students used markers to create a radial symmetry design on a piece of diffusing paper. 7th graders from Mrs. Tadlock’s science homeroom class continue to connect with virtual students through google meet. First, they learned how to create a split-screen on their Chromebooks. Then they worked on having two tabs open at once. They were also able to talk with their classmates who are learning from home - lots of smiling and waving! Students then were able to review scientific variables and asked questions as they came up. Our 7th graders closed out their class with a rousing game on kahoot to apply what they learned about in regards to scientific variables. The competition was fierce! Mustang Families, Make sure your child has something to read...with the library checkout system in place this year....it’s easy! Your child was sent an email last week called “Library Book Checkout” with a link to a Google form. Please have your children use this to fill out any requests for books they might have, whether they are onsite, blended, or virtual. (They can “star” the email so it is easy to find!) Virtual students: Curbside pickup begins this week for your library materials! As long as you placed your hold by noon the day before the scheduled pickup, your materials will be ready for pick up that week. BMS curbside pickup - Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 at the middle school main entrance (Call 262-279-1053 upon arrival and let them know you are here for curbside pickup and your child’s name. Your books will be brought out to you.) BES curbside pickup - Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 at the elementary main entrance (Call 262-279-6496 upon arrival and let them know you are here for curbside pickup and your child’s name. Your books will be brought out to you.) Virtual students returning books should follow the same process as curbside pickup. Onsite and blended students will have a bin located in their grade level wing/area where they can return books. We are still trying to round up books that were checked out last school year but not yet returned. Please help us locate these books so other students may check them out! If you have any questions, please reach out to our library media specialist: Jacki Bolwerk // jacki.bolwerk@gcj2.k12.wi.us Thank you!

Mustangs! Securly is reporting outages with their filter system which has caused our devices to be very slow with accessing any tools needing internet access for both onsite and virtual students. We love that Securly keeps our students safe and we are thankful that they have slowed access due to this outage. We will keep you updated once it is cleared. Thank you SO much for your patience.

Champions enrollment is now OPEN! Here is a message to you from the Champions Manager: As you are all making your final decisions regarding your preferences for how your children will attend school this coming school year please know that Champions will also be open for in-person before and after school care. I also wanted to share with you our updated Health and Safety measures we have in place at Champions to ensure the health and safety of your children. As we welcome students back to our Champions classroom, the way we teach and care for our students will be different. The last several months have been a time of change and uncertainty, and we know that our students will need resilience to recover and thrive. The collective trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, and our students have each been impacted by these changes in different ways. Resilience skills will be at the heart of our Curriculum because resilience is critical to students’ social, emotional, and academic success. Our first two weeks will focus on Social Emotional Learning and forming relationships; in the following weeks students will participate in two-week focused projects that relate to a different skill that will cultivate resilience. At the end of the focused projects, students will collaborate on a final, group project where they’ll use all the skills they’ve developed to bring their project to life! It will take time to rebuild our learning community and establish (or re-establish) relationships, get into the rhythm of routines, identify individual needs, and find new ways to learn together. We’ll start with a focus on what’s most important and then add to that over time. If part of your family’s back to school plan includes needing before and after school care, you can now register for our Fall Programs. With social distancing guidelines that will need to be in place we will have a limited capacity of no more than 20 children within our individual programs. Spaces are limited so don’t wait too long to register. If there are any questions I can answer please feel free to contact me via email or phone. You can register for our fall programs at www.discoverchampions.com Thank you and Best Regards, Nicole Rosselli Champions Area Manager – Antioch, Beach Park, Genoa City KinderCare Education, LLC. The Genoa City Jt. 2 School Board recognized Jan Krueger and Jan Sireno at their regular meeting last night with a Children First Award. The Children First Awards were started in the fall of 2015 to recognize people who were making an extra effort to support children in our school and community. The "Jans" were recognized for their leadership and advocacy to serve food to our students and community during this time of crisis. The care and service to our students that they have demonstrated during this time has been exceptional! We are SO lucky to have them as a part of our District and Brookwood Family. They would love to see you at this week's Grab and Go pick ups at the middle school Monday-Friday from 11-12. #BrookwoodsBest

Thank you to a local community veteran who was a sergeant and served two tours in Iraq (Operation Iraqui Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom) for writing this for our post today: "Memorial Day is to honor those that never made it out of their uniform. They gave their lives, so we could live ours. Our country will forever be in their debt. Please don't thank a veteran on this day, that is for Veteran's Day. Instead, take a moment of silence for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice."

May is Mental Health Month Parents, students and staff, we are amazed by how resilient you are. We’ve got this!! Everyone has spells of feeling down, but depression is more than just spending a few days feeling sad or unhappy. Depression can make you feel persistently sad and down for weeks or months at a time. May is Mental Health Month Everyone feels sad or low sometimes. These feelings usually pass with a little time. Depression——is a mood disorder where symptoms last for at least two weeks. These affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, social interactions and school/work. Children as young as the age of three can show signs of depression. 1 in 20 children will experience depression before the age of 18. If you have concerns about your child and depression. Please feel free to reach out to one of our school counselors. May is Mental Health Month The pre-teen and teen years are a roller coaster of emotions and behaviors. This makes it hard for parents to decide if what behaviors they are seeing are cause for concern or normal. If you have questions about your child's behavior please feel free to reach out to our school counselors. This resource image was pulled by our guidance counselors from mentalhealthfirstaid.org.
